A Gut-Check on Humility That Might Save Your Leadership

Let’s just get this straight: God isn’t impressed by your résumé. Neither are the people you’re called to serve. So before you puff out your chest because your Instagram post got a few fire emojis or someone introduced you as “Pastor So-and-So,” let’s talk about something most leaders forget the higher they climb — humility.

Yeah, that ancient virtue we all say we value but often leave behind once the spotlight hits.

Humility isn’t self-hate. It’s not pretending you suck when you actually crushed it. Humility is knowing exactly who you are — and exactly who you’re not. It’s standing tall in your calling without stepping on others to get there. It’s remembering that the same God who gave you the gift can give it to someone else if you start acting like the gift makes you the main character.

Jesus didn’t ride into Jerusalem on a chariot. He came in on a donkey. Not exactly glamorous. Why? Because His mission wasn’t to flex. It was to save. And if the Son of God chose a donkey over a throne, what makes you think you need a title, a platform, or a personal hype squad to feel valid?

Let’s be blunt: Pride kills. It kills relationships, credibility, momentum, and anointing. Pride whispers, “You’re the man.”Humility reminds you, “You’re just a man.”

So here are 5 Keys to Staying Humble Without Getting Walked On:

Remember Who Got You Here

You didn’t climb here alone. God opened doors, people believed in you, and grace covered your gaps. Never confuse God’s favor with your skillset. Gratitude is the soil where humility grows. Pride forgets. Humility remembers.

Keep a “Foot Washer” Mentality

Jesus washed the feet of people He already knew would betray, deny, and abandon Him. If He could serve like that, you can hold a door, change a diaper in the nursery, or clean up after your own mess. Leadership without service is just entitlement with a microphone.

Stay Confrontable

If nobody can correct you, you’re already in trouble. Humble leaders don’t just accept correction — they invite it. If the only people you listen to are the ones who flatter you, you’re not leading — you’re curating a fan club.

Kill the Comparison Game

Comparison is the thief of joy, but it’s also the gateway drug to pride. You start off encouraged, then someone else succeeds and now you’re offended God didn’t do it for you. Humility says, “If God blessed them, He’s still working over here too.”

Pray the Dangerous Prayer: “Break Me.”

You want to stay grounded? Ask God to break what needs to be broken in you. Not your spirit — but your ego, your insecurity, your self-dependence. Nothing keeps you more humble than knowing you need Him every single step.

Look, humility isn’t sexy. It doesn’t trend. You won’t get invited to speak at conferences for “being real and staying low.” But heaven pays attention to the ones who walk in power without needing the praise.

So next time you’re tempted to believe your own hype, hear the Holy Spirit whisper: “Sit down. You’re not that impressive.” But the God who lives in you? He is. Stay low, stay usable.
