THE SPIRIT OF JEZEBEL

"Oh, no, not another article on Jezebel!" I know, I know. I hear you, but this one is going to come from a slightly different angle. Most people know the story of Jezebel threatening Elijah.

What many miss is that Elijah wasn't her first target. And he wouldn't have been her last.

Jezebel had developed a consistent pattern of hostility toward God's servants. Her issue wasn't with one prophet. Her issue was with the prophetic voice itself. When someone repeatedly finds themselves attacking, undermining, resisting, discrediting, or attempting to control spiritual leadership, we should pay attention. Because in Scripture, this wasn't merely a personality conflict. It was often evidence of a deeper spiritual problem.

That same spirit is prevelent in our world today. Now, I can't speak for the world, but I can speak for the circle that I have watched this play out in 30 years of ministry. Since 1996, I have watched this spirit seek to attack the church, discredit leaders, and distract people from pursuing Jesus.

Jezebel Targeted Prophets Before Elijah

When Elijah appears in 1 Kings 17, Jezebel's war against God's servants is already underway.

The Bible declares, "Jezebel was killing off the Lord's prophets" (1 Kings 18:4). Notice that Elijah wasn't singled out. The prophets were. She systematically sought to remove every voice that represented God's authority. Her goal was never merely disagreement. Her goal was elimination.

There are many people today who believe they are walking with Jesus, but they are working like Jezebel. They hide behind spiritual language, but their whole ministry is on destroying the church of Jesus Christ. Now, let me pause here and say, there are times when leaders, ministries, churches need to be called out for abuse, sin, or illegal behavior. But that's not for "watchdogs" - that is for spiritual authority, not self-appointed accountability elitists.

If a ministry spends all of its time, effort, or energy attacking the very thing that Jesus died for, the church, it is not a ministry, it is fueled by the Spirit of Jezebel.

Jezebel's Weapon Was Intimidation

She didn't initially attack Elijah with a sword. She attacked him with fear. Scripture declares, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them" (1 Kings 19:2). Her goal was psychological. Intimidation. Exhaustion. Discouragement.

If you are a pastor I am sure several names popped into your head as you are reading this article, because you have seen it first hand. I remember years ago a guy in our church didn't like a decision that a staff member made. He pulled me aside and said, "If you don't fire them I am going to take my tithe and run." My response, "Don't let the door hit you." What was he trying to do? Intimidate. He left.

The challenge of ministry is that Jezebel is not a person, it is a prevailing spirit. Social media has crowned people with faux authority to hold ministers, pastors, and denominations accountable. That's one of the reasons why I am glad to be part of a denomination. A covering that holds me accountable.

You see, the spirit behind Jezebel loves to wear leaders down emotionally. If it cannot destroy them publicly, it will try to drain them privately. They will spread rumors, create false narratives, enlist other disgruntled people, and not stop. This spirit is relentless.

How do you know if you have the Spirit of Jezebel? If you have time to monitor a church you "left" and you still criticize the church months or years after leaving, you're still emotionally attached. You didn't exit - you're just lingering where you don't belong. And that's what Jezebel does when she leaves.

Jezebel stirs up trouble while she attends.

Jezebel stirs up trouble after she leaves.

Jezebel Rejected God's Established Authority

Throughout Scripture, Jezebel consistently positioned herself against God's order.

She promoted false prophets.

She financed false worship.

She corrupted leadership.

She elevated voices that agreed with her and attacked voices that challenged her. This remains one of the clearest signs of a Jezebel spirit today. It does not seek truth. It seeks control.

Watch out for Christians who have to control you. If a friend leaves a church, and they try and discourage you from attending that church, they may have the Spirit of Jezebel.

ALERT. ALERT. ALERT. What I am about to say is not going to be popular. If someone church hops and church shops for the entire Christian life because there is something wrong with every church they ever attended. The church is not the problem. They are.

Run from those people. Run hard. Run fast. Run far.

Wait for it, then when the church leadership holds them accountable, they run, spread lies, manipulate people, and hurt the Kingdom of God. And then they do the same thing in the next church ... and the next church ... and the next church.

The Pattern Continues in Revelation

Hundreds of years later, Jesus addresses a church in Thyatira: "You tolerate that woman Jezebel ..." (Revelation 2:20). The original Jezebel was long dead. But the spirit remained.

Notice what Jesus rebukes: Not a mistake. Not an event. Jesus rebukes a tolerated pattern.

The issue was not one disagreement with leadership. The issue was a sustained attacls that continually pulled people away from God's authority. The Spirit of Jezebel is subtle. It lures you into proximity to them. They have a "savior" mentality for everyone. They will say things like, "Everyone tells me everything." Hear me, the Jezebel Spirit is a magnet for mischief. They love to snatch people's heart, divide people's allegiance, and attack church leaders.

It's a pattern.

The Pattern Ends Today

Watch out for the pattern of the Spirit of Jezebel. It's not a strategy or a system - it is a spirit. And that spirit is attempting to infiltrate believers in every church.

Guard your heart.

Protect your church.

Build the Kingdom.

The Kingdom has no place in it for Jezebel Spirit. Scripture declares, "Jehu looked up and saw her [ Jezebel ] at the window and shouted, “Who is on my side?” And two or three eunuchs looked out at him. “Throw her down!” Jehu yelled. So they threw her out the window ..." (2 Kings 9:32-33). It's time for the church to end the pattern and throw the Jezebel Spirit out of the church. In Jesus' name!
